How do I lead in this crazy world?
“This is not the life or society I envisaged for my grandchildren.”
In the past few weeks individual fear, corporate vulnerability and at times a sense of despair have been very present in my coaching conversations. Fears of global recession, of increased militarisation and impending disaster seem possibilities.
And I understand how these sentiments are emerging. I understand how hard it is to project calmness and control as a leader when the speed of the unexpected is accelerating. All the decade old norms are dissolving from beneath you.
The world is like a kaleidoscope, with ever changing configurations of economic, social, geo-political, climatic and technological problems. Leaders of all stripes are having to exercise agility as never before to navigate this interconnected and volatile world.
Yet, there is hope.
Hope comes from how we as individuals can access and identify our inner values to lead deliberately, and to trust our inner authority. It is so critical to be ethical, strong and good role models. When we chose to take that stance, we are in the driving seat. Our demeanour positively impacts and supports others in our organisations or social spheres to also feel hope. It lessens anxiety.
I’m noticing an increase in conversations focusing on inner values. It seems as if now is the time to delve deeply and find out what we stand for, individually, organisationally and nationally. How can we lead and make effective decisions in the moment if we don’t know what we believe in?
In the past, many of us might happily have progressed along a well-trodden route without taking the time to work out: What do I stand for? Now is an opportunity to do just that.
Coaching is the ideal ringfenced time to reflect through the lens of our values. My clients say they are finding clarity to lead, to be vulnerable to their people. They also feel more courageous and authentic after these conversations. They have practical steps to take to move forward.
It is so important that we look at what is working, to focus on positive attributes in our lives. We need to recognise that positive change can come out of seeming chaos.
